How does it actually work?


An air purifier firstly draws air through the inlets, passing it through a series of filters like High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, activated carbon filters, UV-C light, ionizers, or a combination of these methods. Finally, after the filtering process it releases the cleaned air back into the room through the outlets.

Basic Setup & Filtration:

  • An air purifier typically consists of a centrifugal fan to draw the air into the unit, along with one or more filter like HEPA, Carbon, etc which are made up of paper, fiberglass or other fibers, mesh to filter out the pollutants.

  • As air flows through the inlets coming into the unit, it moves through the filters, capturing various pollutants like dust, pet dander, pollen, and larger molecules measuring around 5 microns or less and particles.

  • Most air purifiers use HEPA (High-efficiency particulate air) filters with intricate weaves which help to remove as small as 0.3 microns with high efficiency.

  • Activated Carbon filters also when used can effectively trap odors, gases, smoke particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • Ionizers help to emit ions that attach to airborne particles and get settled or stick to surfaces (as small as 2.5 microns) like animal dander.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) filters are used to destroy biological impurities like mold and bacteria.

  • After capturing and neutralizing pollutants, the cleaned air gets recirculated into the environment.
